The Louisiana Supreme
Court is the court of last resort in Louisiana. Jurisdiction
of the Court is Original, Appellate and Supervisory. Appellate
jurisdiction extends primarily to cases in which a statute
has been declared unconstitutional by a lower court or where
a person has been convicted of first degree murder and sentenced
to death. The Court has original jurisdiction over attorney
and judicial discipline; however, there are administrative
procedures in place for the preparation of the record and
recommendations to the Court for action. The majority of filings
in this Court are requests for the Court to exercise its supervisory
jurisdiction by reviewing actions of lower courts. The Court
sits en banc.
