When operational, the portal will be administered by the Louisiana Protective Order Registry (LPOR), and will be accessible 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. After a testing phase, the applicant will be able to apply online for a protective order, saving time and eliminating the need to travel to the courthouse.

The digital protection order portal is part of the Louisiana Judiciary’s ongoing efforts to address domestic violence. Earlier this year, following a recommendation from Louisiana Supreme Court Justice John Michael Guidry, the Supreme Court ordered all judges to complete one hour of domestic violence and trauma-informed court training every other year. The Louisiana Supreme Court is one of only seven state Supreme Courts that administers their state's protective order registry.

Louisiana Supreme Court Chief Justice John L. Weimer said, “Together with our funding partners in the Legislature, we are simplifying the protective order process, which improves access to justice for those who have been victimized by domestic violence. Domestic violence is far too prevalent in Louisiana, and the judiciary must continue to reduce barriers and increase access to the court system.”

“The Supreme Court is excited to join with Louisiana’s advocates against domestic violence, law enforcement, clerks of court, lawyers, and judges to move this project forward,” stated Louisiana Supreme Court Associate Justice Jay B. McCallum, “Without their involvement, implementing this throughout the state would not be possible.”

“In traveling the state, I’ve heard from public officials, advocates, and law enforcement about the obstacles facing domestic violence survivors. By utilizing this technology, we are making courts more efficient, effective, and responsive while addressing a critical need,” expressed Louisiana Supreme Court Associate Justice Cade R. Cole.

The Court contracted with the National Center for State Courts (NCSC) to assist with planning, design, and development of the portal to ensure national standards and best practices are implemented.

Said Laurie Givens, Vice President of the National Center for State Courts: “Louisiana’s deliberate and research-informed approach to developing this portal demonstrates a strong commitment to improving access to justice. By grounding the design in best practices and national standards, the state is ensuring that all litigants—regardless of circumstance—can navigate the protective order process more efficiently and effectively.”

The Louisiana Protective Order Registry (LPOR) is a statewide repository of court orders issued to prohibit domestic abuse, dating violence, stalking, and sexual assault. The registry was established by legislative act in 1997, for the purpose of enhancing court-ordered protections for victims and their minor children, and to aid law enforcement, prosecutors, and the courts in handling cases involving intimate partner violence.

Louisiana Supreme Court Mission: To preserve the integrity of the judiciary, to build and maintain public trust, to provide effective and efficient administration of justice in the Supreme Court, to ensure proper administration and performance of all courts under Supreme Court authority, and to ensure the highest professional conduct, integrity, and competence of the bench and bar.

For more information visit lasc.org or contact Louisiana Supreme Court Deputy Judicial Administrator-Community Relations, Trina S.
