Born in 1852 on the St. Mary Parish plantation home of Gabriel Fuselier, his maternal grandfather • Joshua Baker, his paternal grandfather, was a military governor of Louisiana from 1868-1869 • Educated at home and then in Virginia • Legal career began in 1874, when he was licensed to practice • Judicial career began in the local criminal court where he served for more than 30 years • Elevated to the Louisiana Supreme Court as an Associate Justice; he served until his retirement in 1922
