Martin's Reports (Old Series Volumes 1-12)

François-Xavier Martin sat on the Louisiana Supreme Court from 1815-1846, the last 10 years as Presiding Judge. Prior to his tenure on the Supreme Court, he served on the Superior Court of the Territory of Orleans. Martin, who learned the publishing trade as a young man, took the opportunity to begin publishing the Court’s opinions, which weren’t being published. When Martin became a judge on the Louisiana Supreme Court, he continued to publish the Court’s opinions. The first two volumes of the old series are Superior Court decisions, from 1809-1812 (opinions prior to that time were never published). Volumes 3-12 are the opinions of the Louisiana Supreme Court from 1813-1823.

Supreme Court of Louisiana Minute Books

The Louisiana Supreme Court minute books represent a significant part of the documentation of the Court's past. The minute books detail the business of the Court's sessions at New Orleans, the seat of the eastern appellate district. Daily entries include the judges present, the cases before the Court, the disposition of cases, Court rules, and admissions to the bar. These volumes are the two earliest volumes of the Court's minute books, covering 1813-1823.
