Born in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, January 29, 1849 • Earned an L.L.B. from the University of Louisiana, 1870 • Admitted to the bar in 1871 and began practicing law in Shreveport • Delegate to the state constitutional convention, 1879 • As governor, he was responsible for substantial progress in public education, including the addition of school libraries, 1906 • State constitutional convention president, 1913 • Died in Shreveport, Louisiana, June 22, 1922 and is interred at Greenwood Cemetery
