Born in Amelia County, Virginia, 1824 • Attended Emory & Henry College, 1845 • Moved with his family to North Louisiana and was soon after admitted to the bar • His father, Dr. Bartholomew Egan, was well known for his scientific achievements, and was close friends with Thomas Jefferson • Died on November 29, 1878 while serving his term as Associate Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court, and is buried in Oakland Cemetery in Shreveport • Louisiana Supreme Court loaned his portrait to Tulane Law School in 1959
