Born October 10, 1796, in Boston, Massachusetts • Graduated from Harvard College in 1815 • Studied law in The Hague while serving as secretary to his uncle, the United States minister • Moved to New Orleans in 1817, was admitted to the bar in 1822, and established a successful law practice • A Jacksonian Democrat, served as Attorney General 1830-32 • Championed development of higher education in Louisiana, advocating for the founding of the institutions which became Tulane University and its medical school • Appointed judge of the Supreme Court in 1839, but resigned 3 months later because of dissatisfaction with Martin's administration of the court • After reorganization of the court by the Constitution of 1845, was appointed chief justice, serving until 1853 • Earned new respect for the court by increasing efficiency and reducing delays •
