Born in Albemarle, Virginia, September 30, 1799 • Moved to Opelousas, Louisiana and began practicing law in 1820 • Elected U.S. Representative for Louisiana’s 3rd congressional district as an Anti-Jacksonian from 1834 to 1837; and as a Whig from 1837 to 1840 • In 1840, Garland left U.S. House of Representatives to accept appointment to the Louisiana Supreme Court • Relocated to Brownsville, Texas in 1846 and remained there until his death on August 13, 1863 • Interred at Old City Cemetery, Brownsville, TX • Portrait image courtesy of Garland family
