William Bryan Hyman (1814-1884)
Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Louisiana, April 1, 1865, to November 1, 1868
Born April 30, 1814, in Williamston, North Carolina • Graduated from the University of North Carolina and admitted to the bar in 1839 • Moved to Rapides Parish, Louisiana, establishing a successful law practice • Married Hermenegildo Dolores Gonzales in 1847 and had five children • Served as parish judge in Alexandria • Opposed secession and swore allegiance to the United States when Union Army occupied Alexandria • Moved to New Orleans when army retreated • Appointed chief justice of federally-controlled Supreme Court by Union supporter Governor James Madison Wells, April 1, 1965 • Removed from seat when Supreme Court was reconstituted in 1868 • Appointed judge for Jefferson Parish, serving 1871-1880 • In later years served as Surveyor for the Port of New Orleans • Never overcame his opponents' questioning of his loyalties in the hotbed of Reconstruction Era politics • Died August 9, 1884, and was buried in Carrollton Cemetery in New Orleans • Portrait painted by Cameron McConnel
