Born August 3, 1852, in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana • Father served in the Louisiana Legislature and was a member of the Secession Convention of 1861 • Educated at home and at the Poydras Academy • Attended Georgetown University, but after his father's death in 1868, left before graduating and studied law at the University of Louisiana (forerunner of Tulane) • Admitted to the bar January 14, 1873 at age twenty • Elected district attorney for Pointe Coupee, Avoyelles and West Feliciana parishes, serving for three years • Married Euphemie Labatut December 27, 1876, and had seven children • Sat in 1898 Constitutional Convention • Served as bankruptcy referee for Baton Rouge Division of Eastern District of Louisiana • Appointed associate justice in 1901 by Governor W.W. Heard and was elected to continue in 1908 • Served as chief justice only one year, choosing to retire voluntarily • Earned respect and admiration for his knowledge of and pride in the Civil Law • Died in New Orleans August 3, 1924 • Portrait painted by Paul Leroy
