Born in 1855 in Madison County, MS • Moved to Louisiana circa 1860 and settled in Amite, Louisiana in 1866 • Attended the Virginia Military Institute and graduated in 1875 • Studied law at the old University of Louisiana (now Tulane University) • Admitted to practice law in 1887 • Returned to Amite, La. and engaged in private practice until he was elected as a District Court Judge for Tangipahoa Parish where he served until 1904 • Delegate to the 1921 Louisiana Constitutional Convention; Chairman of the Bill of Rights Committee • In private practice from 1904-1922, notably during the era of the Piney Wood Violence • Elected as an Associate Justice for the Louisiana Supreme Court in 1922 • Sworn in on January 2, 1923 and died of heart failure 12 days later • He was buried in his judicial robes • Louisiana Supreme Court loaned his portrait to Loyola Law School in 1959
