Born in Lafayette, Louisiana • Attended Law School of Transylvania in Lexington, Kentucky • Married Marie Leontine Durand (1847) and raised 11 children in St. Martinville, Louisiana • Succeeded his father, Associate Justice Cornelius Voorhies, at the Louisiana Supreme Court • Youngest justice at age 30 • Served in Confederate Army, as Judge Advocate General for the Trans-Mississippi Dept. • Authored several compilations of Louisiana laws • Was Lieutenant Governor during the Mechanics Institute Riot, 1866 • Died in New Orleans, January 20, 1913, the same day as his son William, and is buried at St. Louis No. 3 Cemetery • Portrait painted by Andres Molinary in 1913
