Born 1765 in South Carolina-or, according to some sources, in England • Appointed by President Jefferson on July 1, 1801, to U.S. Circuit Court for Fifth Circuit (consisting of the judicial districts of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia) • Appointed on November 30, 1804, to new federal judgeship created for the U.S. District Court for the Territory of Orleans • Upon Louisiana's admission to statehood, appointed by President Madison on May 27, 1812, as judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Louisiana • Appointed by Governor Claiborne as Presiding Judge of the newly-established Supreme Court of Louisiana on March 1, 1813, but resigned and ended his term July 5 • Reappointed judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Louisiana by Madison and confirmed June 1, 1813 • Served until his death on December 19, 1820 • Participated in the establishment of the Episcopal Church in New Orleans and was a member of the first vestry of Christ Church •
