Born September 21, 1774, near Staunton, Virginia • Educated at the home of his father, the governor of Georgia, and at Liberty Hall in Lexington, Virginia • Studied the common law with his brother, John Mathews, and George Walker in Augusta, Georgia • Admitted to the Georgia bar in 1799 • Appointed judge of Mississippi Territorial Court by President Jefferson July 1, 1805 • Appointed January 20, 1806, to Superior Court of the Territory of Orleans, which became the Superior Court of the new state of Louisiana upon statehood on April 30, 1812 • Appointed one of three judges of the new Louisiana Supreme Court upon its creation on March 1, 1813, by Governor Claiborne • Lived near St. Francisville in West Feliciana Parish •
